What Size Winch for an ATV or UTV? Pull Ratings Explained

Size an ATV or UTV winch from your machine's weight, understand rated line pull and drum layers, and choose synthetic or steel rope and a mount.

Quick answer

A common rule is to choose a winch rated for at least 1.5 times your machine's loaded weight. Most ATVs use winches around 2,000 to 3,500 pounds of rated pull and most UTVs 3,500 to 5,000 pounds. Rated pull applies to the first layer of rope on the drum and falls with each extra layer. Synthetic rope is lighter and safer if it breaks; steel cable resists abrasion and heat.

A winch is the most useful recovery tool on an ATV or side-by-side. Bigger is not always better; it adds weight and draws more current.

Sizing

Rated pull ≥ loaded vehicle weight × 1.5.

Machine Typical loaded weight Winch rating to consider
Mid-size ATV 900 to 1,200 lb 2,500 to 3,000 lb
Large ATV 1,200 to 1,600 lb 3,000 to 3,500 lb
Two-seat UTV 1,800 to 2,500 lb 3,500 to 4,500 lb
Four-seat UTV 2,500 to 3,300 lb 4,500 to 5,000 lb

Use your owner’s manual for curb weight, then add riders, fuel and cargo.

Rope layers

Manufacturers rate line pull on the first wrap of rope. As rope stacks up, pulling power drops. For a hard pull, spool out more rope or use a snatch block to double the pull.

Synthetic or steel

Synthetic rope Steel cable
Weight Light, floats Heavy
If it breaks Drops with less stored energy Can whip
Wear Needs protection from heat and abrasion Handles abrasion, can kink and fray
Fairlead Hawse (aluminum) Roller

Mounting and wiring

Buy a mount made for your make, model and year. Winches draw high current, so check your battery and charging system. Wear gloves, use a line dampener and never step over a loaded line.

Common questions

What size winch do I need for a UTV?

Multiply the loaded weight of the machine, with riders and gear, by 1.5. Many UTVs land in the 3,500 to 5,000 pound range.

Is synthetic rope better than steel cable?

Synthetic is lighter, floats and stores less energy if it snaps. Steel resists abrasion and heat but kinks and frays.

Why does my winch pull less than its rating?

Rated line pull is measured on the first layer of rope. Each additional layer on the drum reduces pulling power.

Do I need a winch for plowing?

Most ATV and UTV plow systems use the winch to lift the blade, so a plow kit usually assumes a winch is fitted.
